A leading model in behavioural communication, Neuro Linguistic Programming, is primarily the process of ‘modeling’ expert behaviour to achieve expert results. By modeling experts since the early 1970’s, the co-founders, Dr. John Grinder and Richard Bandler, discovered common patterns of behaviour (verbal and non-verbal) that experts demonstrate when achieving exceptional results. These patterns have been researched and transferred to others. What is taught in the 18-day Practitioner certification training is primarily applications of Neuro Linguistic Programming. The process of modeling, which is what John Grinder and Richard Bandler applied originally to discover how experts do what they do, encourages greater involvement of the unconscious (not the conscious) mind, whereby unconscious or implicit modeling at an internal process level occurs. This is taught in the 18-day Master Practitioner certification training.
Why is Neuro Linguistic Programming useful in organisations?
Firstly, everybody you work with has the behavioural and communication skills that are taught in NLP training courses. These skills were available to us from our childhood. And when these skills are used during a successful negotiation, mediation, or sales pitch, it generally happens at an unconscious level. You are not consciously aware of your internal process at the time you get the results you get – other than at a content level. However, as we grow up, external influences like parents, other people and our environment can create beliefs that reduce these skills in ourselves, or we simply forget how to use the range of skills we have.
Many business people think that everyone has an ‘off day’ from time to time – “that’s normal” is a common response. The kind of day where nothing goes to plan, or the more you try to correct matters the worse they get, when selling would be so much easier if customers didn’t get in the way, if the boss wasn’t so narrow minded you’d get your proposal approved etc.
